How the Alfa Laval Controlled Rotating Retractor UltraPure works
The Alfa Laval Controlled Rotating Retractor UltraPure is a precision-engineered, wall-mounted cleaning device for applications requiring stringent hygienic conditions. This CIP retractor delivers reliable and controlled cleaning performance in challenging environments and hard-to-reach areas such as ducts, pipes, tanks and enclosed areas.
Pneumatic movement and controlled cleaning pattern
The device extends into and retracts from the product-contact zone. After full extension, a pneumatic actuator initiates a slow and regulated rotation. Two throttle valves give operators control over rotation speed, allowing faster cycles for light fouling and slower motion for more persistent deposits.
Pressure and flow create high-impact jets, rotating in a reliable 400° cleaning pattern in one direction, followed immediately by a 400° pass in the reverse direction, ensuring thorough cleaning of internal surfaces in duct, pipes and tanks.

Continuous monitoring and system control
The Controlled Rotating Retractor is integrated with an Alfa Laval ThinkTop V70 sensing and control unit, enabling seamless interface with the PLC system for real-time monitoring and performance validation.
Optimized coverage and performance
Carefully engineered cleaner head produce strong cleaning jets, enabling broader surface coverage compared to similar systems. This reduces the number of units required and helps lower overall investment costs.
Flexible and hygienic construction
The design accommodates draining, air purging, CIP and sterilization-in-place (SIP) processes. The unit is self-cleaning in all areas except the plug, which is cleaned by an adjacent device.
Safe, efficient maintenance
Maintenance is simplified with a one-handed tool for easy wear-parts removal, without detaching the supply tube from the retractor. The retractor remains securely connected to both the CIP supply tube and the process line throughout servicing, ensuring safe disassembly and easy maintenance — even in difficult-to-access locations.
Controlled vs. Free Rotating Retractors
The Alfa Laval Controlled Rotating Retractors deliver deeper, more effective cleaning through slow, steady rotation and powerful, jet-like sprays. This precise cleaning action covers a longer path, reduces water consumption, and requires fewer units compared to the Free Rotating Retractors.

FAQ about Controlled Rotating Retractor UltraPure
Q. What is the Alfa Laval Controlled Rotating Retractor UltraPure?
A. Think of it as a smarter, high-performance CIP device for cleaning or sterilizing hard-to-access areas in high-purity processing lines. This retractable CIP cleaning device is designed for spray-drying and powder-handling applications, especially in the pharmaceutical industry. It cleans or sterilizes product-contact surfaces in ducts, pipes, tanks, and other enclosed areas while reducing the use of water and cleaning media.
Q. How is the Controlled Rotating Retractor UltraPure different from static spray balls?
A. The UltraPure is significantly more effective than traditional static spray balls. It delivers up to 100× higher cleaning efficiency. It also reduces the use pf water and cleaning media by up to 55%. This results in faster cleaning cycles and more consistent coverage. It also reduces operating costs. Better cleaning reduces downtime, which increase production time.
Q. How does the Controlled Rotating Retractor UltraPure work?
A. The device pneumatically extends into the process area. It then rotates with precise control. High-impact cleaning jets systematically cover all product-contact surfaces. Rotation speed is adjustable. Higher speed is used for lightly soiled areas while lower speed is used for heavy residues. This optimizes cleaning performance and resource use.
Q. Where is the Controlled Rotating Retractor UltraPure used?
A. It is used in areas with limited access. It is ideal for challenging environments such as ducts, pipes, tanks, and other enclosed areas where permanent CIP devices cannot be installed.
Q. How much water and cleaning media can the device save?
A. It can reduce water and cleaning media use by up to 55% compared to static spray balls.
Q. Is the Controlled Rotating Retractor UltraPure suitable for powder-handling applications such as milk powder?
A. Yes. It is engineered for powder-handling applications, including milk powder. It removes even small residues effectively. This helps maintain hygiene and product quality.
Q. Can the Controlled Rotating Retractor UltraPure perform sterilization-in-place (SIP)?
A. Yes, this self-cleaning device supports SIP, along with draining and air purging. It ensures a sterile process environment for the next production cycle.
Q. Does the Controlled Rotating Retractor UltraPure comply with strict hygiene standards?
A. Yes. It is designed according to EHEDG guidelines and also carries the 3-A symbol, confirming compliance with hygienic design and food safety standards.
Q. What are the benefits of real-time remote monitoring with the Alfa Laval ThinkTop?
A. Remote monitoring is important for hard-to-access areas in process lines. The ThinkTop provides rotation detection. It verifies the correct position and operation of the retractor, ensuring the device is functioning properly. It reduces manual inspections, supports compliance, and optimizes cleaning performance
Q. Are other versions of the Controlled Rotating Retractor available?
A. The Alfa Laval Controlled Rotating Retractor is available in two versions: standard and UltraPure. The Ultrapure has a higher- grade product-contact surface finish. It is used from more demanding hygienic applications.
