Integrated with the Alfa Laval ThinkTop® V70 sensing and control unit, it provides real-time feedback for full process control.

Fully self-cleaning, CIP-compatible, SIP and air-purging capable, it ensures hygienic cleaning cycles, safeguards product quality, maximizes production uptime, and it enhances workplace safety by reducing manual intervention and supporting compliance to strict hygienic standards.

How the Alfa Laval Controlled Rotating Retractor works

The Alfa Laval Controlled Rotating Retractor is a high-precision, wall-mounted CIP cleaning device designed for industries with strict hygiene standards. It ensures efficient, controlled cleaning in demanding environments.

Pneumatic extension and precise cleaning sweep

The CIP cleaning device extends and retracts pneumatically into the product contact area. Once fully extended, a pneumatic actuator triggers a slow, controlled rotation of the device. The controlled rotating retractor then performs a thorough 400° cleaning sweep in one direction, immediately followed by a 400° sweep in the opposite direction, thoroughly cleaning surfaces inside pipes, ducts or tanks. Two throttle valves allow operators to adjust rotation speed – faster for lightly soiled, easy-to-clean areas and slower for stubborn residues.

Real-time monitoring and control

The Alfa Laval ThinkTop integrated with the retractor connects to the PLC system for real-time control. The ThinkTop monitors device position, jet impact, and cleaning performance.

Versatile and hygienic design

The retractor supports draining, air purging, CIP and sterilization-in-place (SIP) cycles, and is self-cleaning except for the product-contact surface, which is cleaned by a neighboring device.

Safe, simplified maintenance

Using a one-handed tool, operators can remove wear parts without disconnecting the supply tube from the retractor. The retractor body remains attached to the SIP supply tube and the process line during maintenance, enabling safe, quick and easy maintenance.

Maximized coverage and efficiency

Precision-cut openings deliver powerful cleaning jets, covering a larger cleaning area than similar devices, reducing the number of units needed and lowering capital costs.

Controlled vs. Free Rotating Retractors

The Alfa Laval Controlled Rotating Retractors deliver deeper, more effective cleaning through slow, steady rotation and powerful, jet-like sprays. This precise cleaning action covers a longer path, reduces water consumption, and requires fewer units compared to the Free Rotating Retractors.

FAQ about Controlled Rotating Retractor

Q. What is the Alfa Laval Controlled Rotating Retractor?

A. Think of it as a smarter, more powerful way to clean from the inside out. This high-performance, retractable cleaning-in-place (CIP) device reaches deep into ducts, pipes, tanks, and other hard-to-reach areas. It cleans product-contact areas thoroughly, using fewer resources.

Q. How is the Controlled Rotating Retractor different from static spray balls?

A. It’s significantly more effective than static spray balls. It delivers up to 100× higher cleaning efficiency. Cleaning cycles are faster with more thorough results. It also reduces operating costs. More effective cleaning means less time, less water and less cleaning media required, reducing operating expenditures.

Q. How does the Controlled Rotating Retractor work?

A. The device pneumatically extends into the process area, then rotates with precise control. High-impact cleaning jets cover all product-contact surfaces. The rotation speed is fully adjustable. Using faster speeds for lightly soiled surfaces and slower speeds for stubborn residues optimizes cleaning efficiency and performance.

Q. Where is the Controlled Rotating Retractor typically used?

A. Wherever access is limited and cleaning is challenging. It’s ideal for use in ducts, pipes, tanks, and other enclosed or hard-to-access areas where permanent CIP devices can’t be installed.

Q. How much water and cleaning media can the device save?

A. It can reduce water and cleaning media consumption by up to 55% compared to traditional static spray ball devices.

Q. Is the Controlled Rotating Retractor suitable for powder-handling applications such as milk powder?

A. Absolutely. It’s engineered for powder-handling applications, including milk powder. It effectively removes even small residues. This helps maintain hygiene and product quality.

Q. Can the Controlled Rotating Retractor perform sterilization-in-place (SIP)?

A. Yes, this self-cleaning device supports SIP. It also supports draining and air purging to ensure a sterile process environment for the next production cycle.

Q. Does the Controlled Rotating Retractor comply with strict hygiene standards?

A. The Controlled Rotating Retractor is designed according to EHEDG guidelines and carries the 3-A logo, confirming its compliance with the highest standards for hygienic design and food safety.

Q. What are the benefits of real-time remote monitoring using the Alfa Laval ThinkTop™?

A. Remote monitoring is essential for Controlled Rotating Retractors installed in hard-to-access areas. Alfa Laval ThinkTop provides unique rotation detection, verifying that the device is both in position and rotating correctly during operation. This reduces manual inspection, supports compliance, and helps optimize cleaning performance.

Q. Are other versions of the Controlled Rotating Retractor available?

A. Yes, there are two versions of the Alfa Laval Controlled Rotating Retractor: Standard and UltraPure. The UltraPure version has a higher-grade product-contact surface finish for applications with higher hygienic requirements.
