Équipements pour les biocarburants marins

Matching sustainability with certainty

As the marine industry strives to decarbonize, biofuels are an attractive option for reducing its CO2 footprint. Biofuels were accepted into the industry in 2024 through the incorporation of FAME (fatty acid methyl ester) into the ISO 8217 fuel standard, allowing blends with unlimited FAME content. With the same equipment as is used on today’s vessels, biofuels can provide carbon neutrality when produced from the right biomass. However, they also raise significant new challenges, especially when it comes to storage and treatment. As a partner to the marine industry for over 100 years, Alfa Laval has the deep insights – and solutions – to help you transition smoothly to biofuel operations.

Biofuels in the fuel line

Biofuels are used on board in the same way as conventional oils, but some of their properties can be unconventional. With Alfa Laval expertise in fuel treatment and conditioning, you can be sure of continued safety and efficiency – despite widely varying biofuel characteristics.

Fuel Supply System – Oil & Biofuel

The Alfa Laval FCM 1.5 fuel supply system can be fully configurated by the accurate selection and sizing of the installed equipment as well as by the detailed design of the process to efficiently feed the served users with the perfect match of the required conditions at their battery limits. It can automatically handle multiple fuels by dedicated set of parameters, and it can safely perform the changeover among them without any limitation to the engine load during the procedure.

Moatti filters and marine biofuels

The Alfa Laval Moatti range of automatic backflushing filters provides unique features to optimize engine uptime at the lowest cost of ownership. Installed in thousands of marine vessels world-wide they are used with all types of conventional fuels and are now biofuel ready, providing complete protection for all sizes of marine engines.

Understanding marine biofuels

The first step in succeeding with marine biofuels is understanding the challenges. Even the most prominent biofuel types, FAME (fatty acid methyl ester) and HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil), behave much differently from traditional fuels. As a result, they require careful management on board and excellent control over the separation process. Our white paper, which has been updated to reflect biofuel developments in the ISO8217:2024 revision, puts both biofuels and biofuel blends in focus, explaining what to expect and consider when it comes to your fuel line.

Alfa Laval Test & Training Centre

The varied composition and characteristics of biofuels create new demands on board, especially when it comes to reliability and efficiency. Alfa Laval is meeting those demands with many decades of fuel handling experience, but also through extensive testing at the Alfa Laval Test & Training Centre. This unique R&D facility, which has a 2800 m2 testing space and dedicated biofuel resources, is providing deeper insights into biofuel properties and combustion.
