Two configurations in one design

The Alfa Laval PilotUnit Combi M39/M3.8 is designed with an Alfa Laval LabStak® M39, holding a plate-and-frame M39 module, and a 3.8" housing for one 3.8" spiral-wound element. The M39 module has a flexible flat sheet membrane area from 0.2 to 1 m² whilst the 3.8" element will have a membrane area of up to 7.3 m² depending of membrane type. 

The Alfa Laval PilotUnit Combi M39/M3.8 is a complete unit with pump, filter, heat exchanger, valves, tank etc. It needs only connection to power supply, compressed air, water and feed product to operate.

The unit is available with either a 50 Hz or a 60 Hz recirculation pump from Alfa Laval.

Ideal test tool

The Alfa Laval PilotUnit Combi M39/M3.8 is the ideal tool for selective flat sheet membrane screening, pilot scale spiral tests and small-scale production using ultrafiltration and microfiltration. It allows for simultaneous testing of different membrane types and comparison of system configurations.

Alfa Laval also provides tailor-made system solutions for individual requirements.

Flat sheet membrane options

The M39 plate-and-frame module in the Alfa Laval PilotUnit Combi M39/M3.8 is designed with open channels across the membrane surface. The feed stream/retentate flows through these.

The membrane itself is supported by hollow plates with numerous slots that allow the permeate to collect and be removed from the unit via the permeate collecting tubes.

Plate-and-frame units use the membrane itself, aided by lock strips, to seal off the feed/retentate from mixing into the permeate channels. This also prevents any leaks from the plate stack itself.

The plate-and-frame configuration is particularly suitable for testing a number of membranes simultaneously or when processing high viscosity products.

Spiral element options

The element housing in the Alfa Laval PilotUnit Combi M39/M3.8 is specially designed for Alfa Laval 3.8" ultrafiltration and microfiltration spiral elements with a full range of channel spacers for different product viscosities.

The flow configuration of the elements makes for reliable scale-up.
