Food sterilizers
A reliable food sterilizer does more than eliminate harmful microbes – it protects your brand. Using proven heat sterilization technology with precise thermal control, Alfa Laval food sterilization systems extend shelf life while preserving the taste, texture, and nutritional value of even the most delicate ingredients. From juices and purées to viscous products, each industrial sterilizer helps you achieve consistent safety, lower energy costs, and uninterrupted production.
How our food sterilizer systems protect and preserve
- Guaranteed safety: Proven heat transfer technology combined with an integrated control system ensures fail-safe operation
- Adaptable solutions: Plate, tubular and scraped surface heat exchangers handle diverse product types and processing needs
- Energy efficiency: Optimized heat transfer, efficient pumping, and smart CIP cycles reduce overall energy use
- Global support: Worldwide presence with local service, genuine spare parts, service kits, and proactive maintenance
Alfa Laval food sterilizers prevent spoilage. Advanced heat sterilization inactivates harmful microbes, improving product safety. These modular industrial sterilizers adapt seamlessly to your process, whether handling clear, low-viscosity liquids, viscous products such as purées, or fluids containing pulp, fibre, and particles.
Minimize thermal stress with gentle, low-shear treatment using superheated water at temperatures close to product sterilization temperatures. For applications that demand extended shelf life, optional ultra-high-temperature (UHT) treatment modules deliver robust sterilization and extend shelf life without compromising quality.
The result is more uptime, higher yields, and full compliance with international food safety standards. Backed by a global network of service and support, Alfa Laval food sterilizers combine flexibility, reliability, and efficiency to meet the exacting production demands of dairy, food, beverage, and other industries.
How food sterilizer systems work
Alfa Laval food sterilizer systems operate on the principle that treatment is both gentle and effective. The product first enters the energy recovery section, where it is preheated by the treated product. Final heating to the sterilization temperature is achieved by superheated water. The temperature of the superheated water is close to the product sterilization temperature to prevent overheating.
The product then passes to a precisely controlled holding section to ensure complete microbial inactivation. Cooling follows in stages, depending on cooling requirement: (1) by heat regeneration to improve energy efficiency, and (2) final cooling to reach safe packaging temperatures.
For products requiring extended shelf life, some systems use ultra-high-temperature (UHT) treatment with rapid heating and cooling using direct steam injection.
Designed for continuous operation, these food sterilization systems seamlessly integrate with cleaning-in-place (CIP) systems. They require minimal maintenance – making them ideal for high-volume, hygienic food production lines.
