Food refrigeration plant on board ship equipped with shell-and-tube heat exchangers
The Royal Princess, a prototype for the next generation of cruise ships, is equipped with an on board food refrigeration plant designed and built by Frigo Tecnica Internazionale (FTI). FTI's refrigeration system is based around Alfa Laval's oil separators for oil flooded screw compressor packages, liquid receivers, DryPlus shell-and-tube evaporators and condensers with aluminium brass pipes.
DATE 2023-11-28Andrea Febo, sales engineer at FTI: " We need compact heat exchangers with good thermal and fluid dynamic behaviour and we need to be sure about performance. The end-user also needs accessibility and ease of maintenance during shipping operations. Alfa Laval meets both requirements."
The Royal Princess is the largest ship in the Princess Cruises' fleet. It includes accommodation for more than 3600 people, as well as 260 000 square feet of public space. FTI had the vital task of supplying the ship with a food refrigeration plant that complies with all necessary legal requirements, as well as live up to the high standards expected throughout the whole vessel.
Construction of the refrigeration system has been a challenge due to strict health and safety regulations as well as insurance requirements. "One challenge has been to comply with the latest IMO (International Maritime Organisation) requirements, namely "Safe Return to Port", which involves the distribution of free food in case of emergency," explains Corrado Romagnoli, technical engineer for the project.
"Alfa Laval can offer the best in terms of consultancy and continuous cooperation during the whole project," says Corrado. "They are also a historical supplier for the ship-building industry."
Products
FTI's refrigeration system includes four chillers, pumps, heat exchangers, valves and main switchboards for automatic control and monitoring.
DryPlus-3 shell-and-tube for low temperature with LRS approval and stainless steel tubes
Fresh-water shell-and-tube condensers with LRS approval and Alubrass tubes
