A flexible boiler platform for moving to LNG
Alfa Laval Aalborg boilers are ready for any fuel in the marine transition to zero carbon – and they can also be configured as electric hybrids. In addition to working with oils and biofuels, they can be set up to use one alternative fuel of your choice. For a growing number of shipowners, that choice is LNG, which reduces CO2 emissions by up to 25%.
If you’re not ready to move to LNG now, you can still future-proof your vessel with LNG in mind. New Aalborg boilers can be installed in an LNG-ready configuration, with a gas-compatible burner, an adapted pressure part and space reserved to add LNG components later. That means not only a lower investment today but also a cost-effective LNG conversion down the road.
LNG boilers for safety as well as steam
Alfa Laval is no stranger to LNG safety, having supplied Gas Combustion Units and inert gas systems to LNG carriers for many years. That experience is reflected in our LNG boiler solution. Besides producing steam with LNG as the fuel source, our solution lets you:
Control LNG tank pressure
The boiler can be used to combust LNG boil-off gas (BOG), producing steam that can be utilized or fed to the dump condenser. This can beneficial during a port stay, for example, when the energy from an auxiliary engine cannot be consumed. Since the burner can handle a free flow from the tank if needed, it also provides important safety backup if your compression train should fail.
Dispose of mixed inert gas and methane
Unlike main engines or gensets, the boiler can burn the mix of inert gas and methane that arises during gas freeing and gassing up. At inspection time, this means you can go straight into dry dock, without making a detour for gas disposal.
For most boiler capacities, only the compact gas valve unit is needed for these capabilities. For boilers with capacities exceeding 45,000 kg/h, a full gas valve train is required.

Small to medium capacities
Intended for auxiliary use, the Alfa Laval Aalborg OS-TCi is a fired marine boiler for producing steam. Designed with helix tubes that provide a larger heat transfer area than conventional solutions, it offers fuel-saving efficiency.

Aalborg OC-TCi
Composite boiler/economizer
The Alfa Laval Aalborg OC-TCi is a marine composite boiler for producing steam through combustion and/or waste heat recovery. With its high efficiency and its ability to reclaim thermal energy, it can help reduce environmental impact.

Aalborg OL
Large capacities
The Alfa Laval Aalborg OL is a high-capacity, fired marine boiler for producing large amounts of steam or hot water. Available in two design pressures, it has a top-fired design that maximizes heat transfer and minimizes pressure loss.

Compact and simple BOG management
Marine boilers are equipment your vessel needs anyway – either for producing steam or for heating thermal oil or water. Since Aalborg dual-fuel boilers can be fired with LNG, they can take on the additional safety function of managing boil-off gas (BOG) alongside steam and thermal energy production.
