Pulp and paper

Lignin

Lignin is one of the most common chemical compounds found in nature. It makes up 25-30% of the dry mass of wood and gives it its mechanical strength.

In sulphate/Kraft mills, lignin in black liquor has traditionally been burnt as fuel in the recovery boiler. New applications for lignin have been developed over the last decades and demand is growing. Examples of new uses include production of construction materials, plastics/polymers, carbon fibres, chemicals and fuels.

Alfa Laval offers both membranes and decanters for use in lignin recovery. Our solutions are characterized by:

  • High purity and product quality
  • Low operating costs
  • Automatic operation
  • Minimum maintenance
  • Compact installations
