Alfa Laval and the Long Duration Energy Storage Council release its Net-zero heat report
On 9 November 2022, the LDES Council released its Net-zero heat report on how energy storage technologies can facilitate the transition towards renewable energy sources and enable Net-zero power grids by 2040. The report reviews how heat and power can work in tandem to accelerate decarbonization through these technologies.
Cost-effectively storage of wind and solar power
Long duration energy storage can cost-effectively store electricity from wind, solar and other renewable sources and then make it available when needed (Lithium-ion batteries offer an alternate solution but become too expensive for storage durations beyond eight hours.). The LDES council established in 2021, will support governments, grid operators and major electricity users in adopting the most cost-effective energy storage solutions to replace the use of fossil fuels. Since its inception at COP26, the LDES Council has tripled in size, with over 65 members in 20 countries, including leading technology providers, industry and services customers, capital providers, equipment manufacturers, low-carbon energy system integrators and developers. Alfa Laval was one of the initiators and part of the council’s presentation of the Net-zero heat report at COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.
“Thermal energy storage technologies are already commercially available. We are contributing with our expertise and our heat exchanger technology which play an important role in these different process alternatives for energy- and cost-efficient energy storage solutions. We have the solutions, but we must work across sectors and in partnerships to truly drive the implementation and thereby speed up the transition towards Net-zero,” says Thomas Møller, President of the Energy Division, Alfa Laval.
Business leaders, policymakers, and investors have an important role in helping unlock the Thermal energy storage potential, mainly by creating a supportive ecosystem. That was the message LDES Council and Alfa Laval conveyed during COP27.
Some highlights from the report:
- Heat decarbonization will be critical to realizing net-zero as heat represents ~45 percent of energy-related emissions
- Thermal energy storage already offers a cost-efficient decarbonization solution to most heat applications
- Thermal energy storage provides a long duration energy storage solution to electrifying and firming heat by enabling long duration heat storage supplied by (clean) electricity or waste heat
