As wastewater treatment plants evolve into resource recovery facilities, wastewater has begun to be perceived as a source of valuable resources, including carbon, phosphorus and nitrogen. As wastewater treatment plants increasingly pursue resource recovery, anaerobic digestion can be integrated into sludge treatment to convert biodegradable organic matter into biogas and recover renewable energy with spiral heat exchangers. At the same time, anaerobic digestion reduces the organic content and volume of sludge requiring final disposal, helping lower transportation and disposal costs, reduce associated emissions and improve overall plant efficiency.
