In fact, there is a growing sense that if environmental problems are to be solved, the time for solving them is now. This can be seen in the requests of ship builders and operators, but also in the expanding body of environmental legislation. Meeting the demands of both requires a commitment that cannot be underestimated.
For Alfa Laval’s part the evidence of that commitment can be seen in the actions and in the strength of the company’s ongoing contribution, collectively referred to as PureThinking. Solutions like PureBallast, which recently became the first to receive Ballast Water Type Approval, are joined by solutions under development in pointing the way to a more sustainable world.
At SMM 2008, Alfa Laval will display the PureThinking solutions PureBallast and PureVent as well as the new S and P Flex range separator module and the F-152 fuel oil filter. Focus will also be on Integrated Ship Support, which combines spare parts procurement with other value-added services. Similar to Alfa Laval’s focus on preventive maintenance, it provides ways to streamline and safeguard your supply chain, enabling faster and smoother communication that results in more economical operation.
Alfa Laval will also premiere AQUA; tomorrow’s freshwater generator, and the new Gunclean Toftejorg i65 D tank cleaning machine. AQUA is a new leap forward in freshwater generation, but also a fully proven solution tested on land and at sea.
PureThinking solutions
The PureThinking product range includes environmentally friendly solutions to treat crankcase gas, bilge water and ballast water.
PureBallast
Alfa Laval’s PureBallast system, which so far has been purchased for installation aboard 30 vessels since its launch in 2006, has rapidly established itself as the commercial leader in ballast water treatment. Having received full Ballast Water Type Approval on June 27th, it is also the only solution without chemical treatment processes to be certified IMO-compliant.
PureVent
PureVent removes oil mist and other particles by high speed centrifugal separation, offering unsurpassed performance in relation to its size and cost. Cleaning efficiency is 99.99% at a throughput of 40 m3/h and the system produces no hazardous waste. The separated oil can be recirculated back to the engine with no negative effect on performance.
SMM premiere: AQUA; tomorrow’s freshwater generator
Using pioneering technology, AQUA handles the whole distillation process with a single plate pack and one type of titanium plate. The result is low-salinity water, provided by a low-weight solution with a minimum footprint and hold-up volume. AQUA is easy to install and maintain, and can most often be expanded with the help of additional plates. So while it comes with the full support of Alfa Laval’s global organization, what it really offers is cost-effective self-sufficiency.
With only half the seawater requirements of other fresh-water generators, the new AQUA from Alfa Laval means savings for ship owners and operators. Half the seawater flow means half the pumping needs – which reduces both energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
Tank Cleaning i65 D
Built on the same platform as the single-nozzle Gunclean Toftejorg i65 S, the Gunclean Toftejorg i65 D offers built-in speed adjustment and the patented, non-slip hysterisis clutch. What’s more, its gearbox contains fewer parts, so it’s even easier to maintain. Most important are the dual nozzles of the Gunclean Toftejorg i65 D, which spray in a characteristic criss-cross pattern for deep and effective cleaning. In addition to reducing the cleaning time, this thorough pattern improves tank heating and minimizes media consumption.
S and P Flex range
Alfa Laval’s S and P Flex range is a new way of looking at separator supply. While retaining the high efficiency, low sludge output and low operating cost of the S- and P-separators, it rethinks the construction of the separation system. The result is a truly modular system, where you design and build as you see fit. You get the S- and P-separators’ outstanding performance, but with greater flexibility than ever before.
FO-Filter
The F-152 automatic filter range provides full-flow fine filtration of heavy fuel oil (HFO) up to 700 cSt/50°C. Developed to cover all the requirements of modern two- and four-stroke engines, the F-152 requires minimal investment yet delivers highly reliable operation and true peace of mind.
